2009 Year in Review

As it is the end of year, I take this time to reflect on all that I can remember about this year. There’s no way I can remember the sheer amount of things that happen over the course of like 350+ days unless it sticks out. And this will be an overview of what stuck out for me. The review is separated into early winter, spring, summer and fall/winter seasons. Long post, but that’s only because I have a lot to say about some things and I like writing a lot. By the by, those links sprinkled here and there are links to the relevant post I made over this year.

  • Early Winter (December 2008 – February 2009)
With the inauguration of Obama, the year 2009 started with a slow start. The early winter of 2009 was a blur, as I don’t recall much. I had just gotten into Perfume late last year and was catching up to them. So in retrospect, January was relatively boring especially since school was just starting up again. SNSD and Buono! were quite prominent during this season.

I can't believe I turned them down! XD

Early in the winter of this year, Korea was going crazy over Gee. I happened to grab the PV on JPS (back when it was still on its old system) and watched it cause I had it. Gee is an excellent song and I cannot deny that. Meanwhile, the Wonder Girls were sitting around doing nothing. Who would ever guess they’d end up touring America as an opening act to the Jonas Brothers. Seriously though, that one came out of nowhere. But other things did eventually distract me to the point where I never did really get to know the SNSD girls. And my time with K-pop for this year stopped here.

*harmonica solo* from Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!
So what distracted me? Buono! did. During the winter I had started listening to Buono! I remember fondly, studying for finals and getting Rottara Rottara stuck in my head. In February, their Buono! 2 album was released. That album was one of the best albums this year. And that album alone really solidified Buono! in my listening ranks. Buono! and the major spring event following effectively barred me from getting into K-Pop.

  • Spring (March – May)
Spring was filled with sprinkles of disappointment glazed over good parts. Elder Club graduated from Hello! Project. Dragonball. Hangry & Angry! and more. Though those are only the couple things that I really remember. This is probably one of the biggest moments of Hello! Project history right here.
The biggest event of the spring is arguably, Elder Club’s graduation from Hello! Project. The Elder Club represents a very big foundation of Hello! Project and a big part of my history as a fan. I was quite sad about it and it wasn’t until recently that I finally sat down to watch the longest graduation concert ever. It was an excellent concert and I wound up catching 660 screencaps (one of which is posted above). Watching the graduation even made me feel the sensation of tearing. And this happened even with someone else in the room. T_T I miss them already.

Despite Elder Club’s graduation, Hello! Project did not sink all of a sudden. In March after a long almost 2 year wait, Morning Musume released Platinum 9 Disc. Among Momusu’s 9 major albums, there are only 2 albums that I find to be all around good. Platinum 9 Disc is one of these two albums. SONGS is my favorite of the album songs and it really represents the new level that Momusu has reached beyond its older roots. Also around this time, I started actively watching concert DVDs and getting a real appreciation for their performances. Meanwhile, Buono! released MY BOY which is my favorite song from them this year. I just had to throw that in there.

    Best Comedy of 2009
In America, Dragonball Evolution the movie was released. And let me tell you that movie… was … lol. I recall hearing about a Dragonball movie way back from junior high school. The fact that it was really done and released made me curious. The best/worst part was that Hamasaki Ayumi herself was singing a tie-in song, Rule. I only intended to watch the movie for the song, but I watched the whole thing just for laughs. At this period in my life, my opinion of Ayu’s music really changed and I basically stopped listening to her recent music.

Hangry & Angry made history as the first real Hello! Project act in America (Hawaii doesn’t count). From what I heard it was a great experience for those who went to Sakura-Con. This didn’t mean much to me though, since I wasn’t following them at the time (as a matter of fact, I still have not started). But it was a start and a premonition for bigger things to come. Buono! was to be going to Europe. That wound up being cancelled however, to the disappointment of many fans.

  • Summer (June – August)
Summer brings a lot of big developments for everyone. Almost everything major happened in July for me. Perfume released Triangle, Momusu came to America, Subgroups! and more.Am I really the only person who loves Zero Gravity?
Perfume released their much anticipated album, Triangle. I love the singles after GAME. But the album was somewhat of a disappointment for me. GAME had a much more powerful variety whereas Triangle seemed to lack the punch that GAME had on its album tracks. Though one track really stuck out for me and that was Zero Gravity. I don’t think I’ve heard a single person who likes that song XD.

Already you can tell this year is very biased towards Hello! Project. It is because I had a big resurgence in fan following, especially because of IntlWota. But that’s not to say other musical entities weren’t capturing my attention. Avex celebrated its 20th year anniversary by releasing Trax. Ravex made this amazing album full of dancey and rave tracks. I love this kind of music too and it really hit the spot when I needed a short break from H!P style music.

Peace out, I'm transferring to Megu's school, Airi is too hard to get.
Now that that short break is over, Hello! Project made a big retro splash by reviving the subgroups of years past. I was intrigued and in the end I approve. I find it nice that Hello! Project is willing to bank on nostalgia while promoting their current and future selves. I also look forward to the next wave of Hello! Project concerts and hopefully the subgroup songs that follow. Unfortunately, Kanna who had been out of action for a while was finally confirmed as returning to the “normal life”. I wonder what happened…

The biggest event of the summer was arguably the death of Michael Jackson, Morning Musume @ Anime Expo 2009. By this time I was a regular in wotachat. I looked forward to reading the updates and news throughout the three days, all of which I was scheduled for long days of work. While I wasn’t there, I enjoyed the coverage from IW, Hello! Party, and the fun time in wotachat. It’s one of my more memorable wota experiences, even though I wasn’t really in on the action. Though, I guess this was mental preparation for the next big step in my fandom of Hello! Project.

    Gaki-san wants more attention XD
Lastly, in the summer Momusu released their 40th single, Nanchatte Renai. I have a fond memory of seeing Yaguchi on a mini-tricycle, pedalling hard for her life in the burning sun while hearing Nanchatte Renai. ^__^ That should be the PV right there, Pinch Triker.

  • Fall / Winter (September – December)
A lot of big things happened this fall/winter. I tend to remember the end of the year more because I’m much more active because of school and not lamenting on the routine feeling of summer. That and of course, it just happened recently ^_^ The end of the year was very much Hello! Project filled for me as Hello!StoreUSA opened as well as a surprise visit by Kago in America. It was also an unfortunate downer with graduations.
Congratulations m-flo, on a 10th anniversary, I look forward to the next big song!
JPS played a big role in J-pop fandom. It was about the fall time that JPS moved to their current system. One day, I was looking through my RSS reader and was pleasantly surprised to find a new m-flo song. And so it was m-flo’s 10th anniversary this fall. I have loved m-flo’s music for quite some time and SOUND BOY THRILLER was a welcome addition to m-flo’s fantastic library.IMGP0317
Hello!StoreUSA was announced sometime in September and opened up to a server overloading rush. Since it’s grand opening, I’ve gone way over my budget and made 5 orders. But I don’t regret it, not one bit ^_^. I’m pleasantly surprised that they have gone the extra mile for everyone, due to setbacks from customs. And I look forward to seeing what they’ll bring to us in 2010. Other than rising prices >.>

Amazingly, the only thing I could think of was that her hands were SO soft
My biggest memory for winter was in November when I got to meet and shake the hand of former Momusu, Kago Ai. It was a great experience and I feel great that I made the journey to Mitsuwa for it. I do feel somewhat sad that I don’t have the same feelings for her as she is now, but it’s a natural part of life. That doesn’t stop me from following her on Twitter, though ^_^.

Tata, I'm gone in March to join Megu and Kanna.
And now the sadness of this year. Erika graduated from C-ute. Koharu also graduated from Morning Musume. These are two pretty big developments since they’ve both been in their respective groups for quite a while. But perhaps the biggest graduation of them all is the ANNOUNCEMENT that Kayo will be leaving POLYSICS. She’s been in the band since 1998. This announcement was literally made during the time I spent writing this post… that’s how big and recent it is! T___T 2009 will forever be the year of graduations in my mind.

And so that is a review of the year from my end. Great things happened, but there were also other things that balanced the good. The saying that all good things must come to an end rings true so much more than it has before. Still, it’s a good year.

Happy new year everyone and let’s look forward to what 2010 will bring us!
IT'S A TRAP 2010

~Siggy, who spent too long writing all of this, but got it all done before 2010 at least…~

Online Casino Games

There are several different online casino games available that can provide you with the different levels of excitement in the gaming environment. Many online casinos allow you to carry out the gambling activities right at their website for entertainment purposes. While other online casinos may require software download that needs to match with the website to account for the wins, losses, and credits. The most frequently used gambling software include: Realtime gaming, Microgaming and Playtech etc. However, such software is incomplete in itself and requires a random number generator for number, cards or dice games.

Today there are several gaming options available for the beginners as well as for the hard core gamblers. The online casino games provide a good opportunity to various players to reach within different difficulty in a game. Also, one can try his/her luck and get a chance to make a fortune. The popular casino games are characterized not on any single criteria but may vary according to the player’s tastes, type of casino and may be on the emergence of any new casino game. Some of the popular online casino games are listed below:

Online Blackjack: This game is also known as twenty-one (21) and is one of the immensely popular online casino games. This game was first played in the French casinos and later on when it emerged in North America it came with a modification in betting scheme yet with same basic rules. The game follows different skills and strategies every time when a player plays the game.

Online Slot Machines: This is a comparatively easier and simpler casino game in contrast to the other casino games. This is a good start off for the beginners and even younger children. The conventional slot machines consist of three or more reels which are repeatedly operated with coins. This further involves matching of symbols either on mechanical reels or on video screens.

Upgrade, Upgrade, UPDATE!

I’ve finally finished sorting out all the pages for the scanlation site and it’s up and ready to go when I get approval from MU… Then I’ll be able to add another project I have my eyes on ;)

I’m still in the midst of working on the first release though, so it won’t be out until a few more days. No promises included.

Halo 3: ODST

One of the second games I bought for Xbox 360 is Halo 3: ODST. Like Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3: ODST has a pretty short campaign, but still very fun. The story is a prequel to the previous game, Halo 3. The main story of the game is that you land in this city being invaded by aliens and you have to trace down all the beacons left by one of your teammates. On the side you help your other teammates battle a whole group of aliens in a certain area. Towards the end you have to go find your captain in an underground part of the city and bring back an alien engineer with you and get off the planet. The controls took me a little longer to understand than Modern Warfare 2. This game also comes with a Halo 3 multiplayer disk so you can play on Xbox Live against your friends. Overall, it is a good buy and I highly recommend this game.

Prey

Imagine, if you please, that you are stranded in town; I don’t know a blizzard or something has blocked off all the convenient routes to your home. (By the way I won NaNoWriMo 2009, thanks for asking…) You’re stuck in a consumerist minefield with nought but minimum clothing and your own instincts (oh dear). In your hand you hold exactly £1.99 in change. And now you’re hungry; famished even.

Also vaginas.

You could crawl into Subway and demand one of those delightful ‘Sub de jours’. Or you could weakly step into your local games retail outlet and purchase a second-hand copy of Prey for a laughable £1.98. Pros and cons of both I feel. For the record I opted for the latter. Which probably explains my malnourished presence. But I got a cheeky 1p bonus out of it at least.

Published by 3D Realms most notably famous for all four…sorry three Duke Nukem games, Prey follows the rippling action of Domasi Tawodi AKA ‘Tommy’. A rather spiteful and cynical character (and therefore somewhat unlikeable from the offset) Tommy rejects his Cherokee ancestry in spite of his stereotype-adhering, wise-talking and possible gambling-obsessed Grandfather’s nay saying.

Tommy is also in love with equally Native American barmaid Jen with whom he struggles to have an open and honest relationship with. So when all three become abducted by aliens in what looks like a knock-off homage to various cheesy invasion films from the fifties, Tommy embarks on an intergalactic mission to save the two people who can actually stand his company. That and people on Earth are being harvested for food and the entire human species is based on lies. But…whatever, save the hot girl.

Prey makes it very obvious from the start that despite it being a run-of-the-mill first-person shooter there are subversive gameplay elements not fully utilised until now. It brings together close encounter violence with bizarre beings that look as though an eight year-old with learning difficulties played Spore for the first time (even though it has yet to be created for another couple of years), gravity puzzles and portal technology.

It is not uncommon to be fighting an entourage of alien beasts while stood on a ceiling, or to venture out into a room only to have immense bastards appear through a portal at one end. There are walkways which allow you to traverse walls and mystical platforms that when shot at will alter the gravity and hurl you and anything not bolted down around like an outer space washing machine. Puzzles are thinly-veiled rather than mind-melting but they can cause headaches.

Often when a game is trying pathetically hard to impress the player with unique experiences it thinks it has often it will lose track of what it was trying to show off in later levels. Prey seems to keep coming back to what it believes is the most impressive aspect of the game, which to be fair just shows that they are at least focused in what they are doing.

And speaking of focus: Tommy’s one-track mind in rescuing Jen is something that we aren’t meant to forget any time soon. It’s understandable that the protagonist would clamber and fight in desperation to save the woman he regrets not confessing his love to, but it seems to serve as a meagre incentive and is a little too expositional. The bulk of the story, which tiptoes around the extinction of the human race and of Tommy’s being our only hope (there’s a unique angle!), is more of an inconvenience to him. So is Prey a tale of invasion and destruction or is it a love story?

The game also introduces a mode which allows the player to detach from Tommy’s physical being and walk around in soul-form. The purpose of this: more puzzles. Although they aren’t puzzles in any hardcore sense. In fact they’re less like puzzles and more like crescendos that try to add a little more depth to an already overly-franchised gaming genre. There are instances in which Tommy will use his soul counterpart to bypass forcefields and traverse pathways invisible to his physical being which, for some unknown reason, resemble strung out webs of sticky…well you can guess.

This whole soul business also means that there is no death in the game. Upon depletion of Tommy’s health he will transport to an ancient land where demonic spirits flutter by. Before you are placed back in the game you use your bow to attack as many spirits as possible with each successful kill replenishing a little of your physical health or spiritual health, depending on which colour you attack. This also aims to keep the whole Cherokee mythos alive and relevant.

It does seem that Prey is having ideas above its station. It’s a game with more ideas than it can handle but it seems to sporadically feature them rather well. Obviously not actually being able to die in-game takes away any challenge or tension. This is a game, after all, with some fairly brutish monsters and it can’t help but test their patience when every time you disappear into the spirit world for a minute they have to twiddle their alien thumbs before you reappear with more health.

The story creates this immense juxtaposition between a huge conflict involving alien and human and the hero’s personal struggle to rescue the woman he loves. This big-to-small ration of storytelling is matched quite eloquently with level designs that range from small, winding and dark corridors to immense (and in one instance gargantuan) landscapes in deep space. The game is broken up by visits to the protagonist’s ancestor’s spirit land in which his grandfather tries in vain to penetrate Tommy’s stubbornness and teach him about his heritage and how the human species is in peril. Which is only met by Tommy’s insistence on rescuing Jen. (aww isn’t it sweet!)

Okay so it’s a little dated graphically and the voice acting is sub-par to say the least but it’s a game that can still impress on some levels. The action is fast-paced and frequent with interspersed boss fights and the use of portals and gravity puzzles make a nice safety mat for what is essentially a fairly weak storyline. But if I’m honest it’s actually a pretty good all round game. It doesn’t smack of effort and it’s at least good at what it does. And as it’s nearly four years old and game technology has moved out of its ex-lover’s flat and into its mistresses’ Penthouse that either says something about the quality of contemporary games, or something about my standards in ‘quality’. As a side note I got Daniel O’Donnell’s new CD this Christmas.

Fallout 3 blank screen

I decided to try to play a classic game of my collection, Fallout 3.  I put the disc in and it installed successfully, but I was getting problems with it when I tried to launch it.

It will come up on the launcher, where I can edit the graphics, and the game file settings but when I click Play, it will go to a black screen with the blue circle animation frozen on the cursor.

I will keep you updated if I find a fix to this, I suspect more people will have the same problem.

Gift for Our Grandkids

The Alphabet Game Rules

You will need a movable piece, like a checker, and a pair of dice.  (These will be included in later versions.)

Begin with your piece at the “Start Here” square, and receive your first score card.

Roll the dice.

Move your piece that number of squares.

When you land on the letter, you need to come up with a word that starts with that letter.  For example, if you land on “G,” you can say “Green.”  The same word cannot be used again during the game.

When you choose a correct word, you get a score card.

Special squares:

  • The start square and the marked corner square are free score spaces.  You can have a score card without saying any word.  You do have to land on the square.  Passing over the square does not give a score card.
  • Red Letters are worth two score cards when you correctly give a word.
  • Purple Letters are worth three score cards when you correctly give a word.

If you cannot come up with a word on any square, you have the choice of trying again on your next turn without moving or moving on your next turn without a score card.

Score card go from one to ten, and you should try to add them up each turn.

The winner is the first person to get to 100 points.

Fly Hard

Fly Hard

Flying Hard with “Fly Hard”

Ever thought of flying through the air with speed of a rocket? That is exactly what you get to do when you play “Fly Hard“. At first the animation and graphics were kind of artsy in a kiddie cartoon type way, but once I gave the game a shot I must admit to being quickly addicted. I started out with the “Something to get me started” rocket and quickly found myself trying to earn more credits to shop and buy upgrades for my rocket. I actually wanted to see how much better, higher, and faster my upgraded rocket could get. I got such a sense of achievement once I got most of my higher level upgrades. The parts, fuel, Boots, and other achievements kept me coming back for more wanting to see just what the next level rocket would be like.

Right now, I am only a three achievements away from being complete in my “Destroyer” category. At the rate of fun I am having with this game I do not think it will be long before all of my achievements are met. I will be recommending this game to my friends and challenging them to match or even surpass my achievements. I highly doubt that will happen since the game is so fun and challenging within itself I may just continue playing and breaking my own records. Hope you like “Fly Hard” as much as I did, Chances are once you have played you will be recommending it to someone else.

 "Just Biofeedback" 2009-12-12
By L. JOHNSON (California)
For those of you who want a higher level experience, just order some biofeedback equipment. I was a Biofeedback therapist back in the 80s and 90s. If you don’t believe that your mind can control certain physical reactions, then you’ll be surprised to learn that there is a ton of research behind this. It reduces blood pressure, muscle contraction headaches, anxiety, stress, insomnia, appetite, etc. The best advanced models are interactive with you computer where you play games controlled with you mind not a joy stick or mouse. You’ll be amazed at what you can do.

This toy sells for $79.00 elsewhere and I purchased it here for $50.00. This is one of the most amazing toys I’ve ever seen. Give it a try and see what I mean! While some of the claims made in other reviews are true, my son has ADHD and this has been a great tool for him scholastically.

The hood has a pressure button that is positioned above the eye on the forehead and is very painful to wear for any length of time. Parts are easily misplaced and small.

Think About It.

“Ludus: some people consider love a game to be played with other people’s emotions. The goal or desire is to gain control over a partner through manipulation. People who experience love as Ludus like to have multiple love interests where they are in complete control. Lying, cheating and deception are common for people who experience love as Ludus – it’s all part of the game. For people who experience love as Ludus, it is satisfying to outwit a partner and exploit his or her weaknesses.“

Left 4 Dead 2 Review

Left 4 Dead 2 Review [550 words]  – CallsignHUSKER

.                    Left4Dead 2 was the target of one of the largest fan boycotts in gaming history due to its suspiciously swift development and release just 1 year after the first game.  Yes this game would have been more appealing if it had been a free expansion to Left4Dead.  That said, Valve fans have been spoiled by the astounding value of many of Valve’s previous products.  The Orange Box comes to mind as it was possibly the best $ value for a new game release ever.  The fact is that Left4Dead 2’s value point exceeds most games released this year.  Perhaps this is paralleled by the fact that some of the most bitter supporters of the boycott bought Left4Dead 2 on the day of its release!  The recent announcement of a massive free expansion to the game that includes a new multiplayer mode, weapons, and a new campaign further bolsters the game’s value.

.                    Left4Dead 2 adds a new multiplayer mode called ’scavenge’ that is possibly the best part of the game.  Scavenge matches are quite short and exciting; survivors scramble to gather gasoline and protect their buddies while the infected take advantage of the predictable areas that the survivors must enter in order to score points.  This mode promotes more complex cooperative play than Left4Dead’s cower-in-a-corner with your team and don’t stop shooting gameplay and is a significant innovation.

.                    The characters in Left4Dead 2 are more interesting than those in Left4Dead but that’s not saying much as the characters in both games seem to have just met and appeared out of thin air on the roof of a building.  The perplexing nature of weapons procurement in the game (weapons are found in neat piles as if someone has scouted areas ahead of you) among other things pulled me out of the experience and felt contrived.  Valve made a point of trying to expand the storyline and believability of the franchise with Lef4Dead 2, and I think they failed miserably.  My instinct is that the design team was split between people who didn’t see the need for deeper characters etc.. and people who wanted a more immersive game world.  The end result was that Left4Dead 2 didn’t make me feel like I was in an alternate reality but in a comic and over the top fiction where the specifics often feel contrived.

.                    That said, the game world is varied and original.  The monsoon-like episodes of the hard rain campaign were especially engrossing and overall the level design is a big improvement over the first game.  The meticulousness with which the new infected zombies were designed results in neat combinations such as when a bedeviled jockey type zombie jumps on you and steers you into a pool of acid spit laid by another player using the spitter.  The new weapons and special infected unquestionably deepen the gameplay.  The true accomplishment of Left4Dead 2 is this masterful level of balance between the infected and the survivors.   I would recommend this game not only to fans of the original but also to new players.

Immersive – 7.5 – The design mentality that storyline just gets in the way is readily apparent.

Technical – 8.0 – The weather effects and atmosphere are great and the graphics are adequate.

Value – 8.5 – This game is so multiplayer centric and full featured that it almost never gets old.

Average = 8/10

Entropia Universe - Maria mastermesh Mesh's Consignment Shop - The Lost Library

The Lost Library

Image of the outside of the Lost Library at Omegaton West Habitat, Delta Tower, Block A, Shop 1

View from inside of the Lost Library Consignment Shop

View from the front window of the Lost Library

A couple of books on display at the Lost Library

My avatar in Entropia Universe, Maria mastermesh Mesh, has a blueprint consignment shop. You can read more about it at the main thread on Entropia Forum about it:
The Lost Library

The goal of the shop is to sell as many blueprints for as many avatars as I can. I don’t make much off of it since I’m charging 20% less than the in game auctioneer would cost the sellers at the same level of markup. However, since I’m charging such low prices, I can manage to get high turnover, which is needed to make a few peds here and there…. I’m thinking about expanding the shop in the future, but may not do that for a while since I just acquired it about a week or two ago. In the few days that I’ve owned the shop, I’ve seen quite a few sales already, so there is a big market potential here. A shop dedicated solely to blueprints is something only a few avatars on Planet Calypso have tried before, and most of those ended horribly. I hope I’m doing something right to keep myself from having that happen to Maria’s shop. There’s a lot of things that happened to get Maria to the place where she is in that game now. Hopefully she’ll continue to progress over time. There is a pretty good chunk of money invested in the shop, so hopefully it won’t go down in value over time… or if it does, hopefully there will be enough sales to make up for the difference. The one constant in Entropia Universe is change… That dynamic universe is always changing… as soon as you think you have things figured out they go and change them on you. I might outline some of the changes in a later post… there’s a ton… both before Maria arrived on Calypso and during her brief stay there so far…

New for Christmas (Part 1)

Well it’s not long now till the big day arrives, so I thought I’d do a quick run down of what’s new in the world of wargaming miniatures. Some of the following are on my wish list for the festive season.

1. First up are the exquisite new plastic War of the Roses foot infantry from Perry Miniatures. These minis are absolutely amazing, nicely sculpted and you get a whopping 48 in a box for £15, a bargain. These are on my wish list, and will be used as part of a medieval army and as infantry in a Brettonian army for Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

2. Black Powder a new rule set from Warlord Games, this looks really interesting, in the fact that its one rule book that cover a period of history that you’d normally require several rule books to game in. This set of rules can  be used to play Napoleonic battles, run games in AWI and the American Civil War, as well late Victorian battles and skirmishes.

3. Wargames Factory have produced some of their best work,  in fact it is their best work, with the release of Vikings in plastic, and they look amazing. I’m now really tempted to build and paint a Viking horde in 28mm, especially now that Gripping Beast have resin ships. These plastic vikings are well sculpted, dynamically posed and you get 24 to a set, with a range of different weapons to tool your rampaging horde with.

4. The undead from Mantic, currently avaliable through pre-order, look really nice. Irregular Magazine were sent some of the Elves for review, and

we were extremely impressed with them. Each box will come with 20 multi part plastic undead, the image of the resin skeleteons look cool, so I can’t wait to get my hands on some of the walking dead. They are released in January 2010, and what I really like about Mantic is the box the miniatures arrive in is completely reuseable as a carry case for the minis once assembled, especially as its supplied with two protective foam sheets.

2009 Christmas Special from Too Fat Lardies

4. 2009 Christmas Special by Too Fat Lardies, this is a 123 page bumper packed PDF for £5, which contains a a bumper packed book full of articles on a wide variety of wargaming subjects. Which includes pulp action, articles on gaming in AWI, WW2 and ACW to name a few. Well worth purchasing for a good xmas read.

5. A Very British Civil War, if you haven’t come across this little gem, then your missing a great alternative history setting which is great fun to play. The source book, which is not rules specific, is set in 1930’s Britian and provides a background for an alternative history where Edward VIII did not abdicate and caused a constitutional crisis leading to a civil war. Recently they’ve added to this source book with a new book which picks up from the original source book, this has been split in to two book, the North and the South. The first of the two the North, which includes the fight for Scotland was released in late November, and the book which continues the action in the South will be avaiable in late January, look out for the section on Cornwall written by yours truely.  All books and flags for the differing factions are avalaiable from Solway miniatures, there are plans afoot for further books on this campaign setting for 2010. I will keep you updated as I find out more.

It Means "One" In Spanish

Ah the good old days.  I’m sitting here in my mother’s kitchen on my quick jaunt to visit Chicago-land this year.  Yesterday I had a few friends over, including Ms. Mo, and we started a good old skool game of Uno.  Now it’s been years since I’d played, but watching one pass around the circle, I fell right back into how simple the game was.  It’s designed for kids after all. Colors and matching numbers–pretty to the point, right?

Well easy to play doesn’ t mean for a quick game.  The game took about 3 hours–and would’ve probably lasted far longer if we didn’t all start to cheat just so someone would win.  We’d come close a number of times… including my sister getting called on not declaring  UNO when she was left with one card.  Auds looked puzzled as we shouted, “You didn’t call Uno draw four!”

“Why would I do that?” Auds said, “Oh!  Uno means one in Spanish!”

There was also the diagnosis that a yellow and blue card both of the same number doesn’t equal a green card, and that all my friends including I are number blind.  Yes, it’s a new illness.  Forget color blind.  Number blind is the new issue–there will be a ribbon and a charity to follow soon.

While  it’s all funny to me, I realize I’m terrible at relaying the story so anyone else (who wasn’t there) would never be able to decipher it.  I should end it here.  But in the mood to play Uno?  Check out this keen fun free online version.

I’m so gonna play right now.

3 out of 5 starsAn unworthy successor, but still entertaining   December 13, 2009
    Leonard Yelverton (Johannesburg, South Africa)
Assassin’s Creed 1 (AC1) was an enthralling game, with groundbreaking visuals, cool fighting and climbing moves, and an original setting: Desmond Miles is the captive of a present-day organisation called Abstergo, and is forced to re-live the memories of his assassin ancestor, Altair, during the time of the Third Crusade.

In Assassin’s Creed 2, we pick up where AC1 left off. The setting changes from the Holy Land to 15th century Italy, and Desmond takes control of Ezio, a descendant of Altair.

At first, the game is a lot of fun, but it quickly becomes repetitive, consisting mostly of aerial acrobatics, church-climbing and monotonous fight sequences.

I prefer games that do not interrupt my focused cold-blooded carnage with cinematic sequences attempting to provide a plot. AC2 is an exception, with an interesting storyline that is both well scripted and well acted, and provides some context to the vengeful bloodletting that is a key feature of the game. (Ezio is an assassin, after all.)

The graphics are not significantly improved over AC1, but some game features have been enhanced: Ezio knows how to swim (whereas Altair met an untimely end when landing in water); there are some new moves and new weapons, a number of side missions, and some perplexing puzzles to solve.

The game claims to provide the player with an “open world,” giving Ezio the freedom to visit any location at almost any time. Although you can carry out most side missions whenever you choose, the overall storyline is still disappointingly linear.

As a successor to AC1, I thought AC2 was a bit of a disappointment, simply because it seems to be more of the same thing – more expansion pack than sequel. Aside from that, the game is enjoyable and has a captivating plot that will leave you impatiently anticipating the next instalment.
    5 out of 5 starsSimply amazing.   December 12, 2009
Jarem J. Allred (Pocatello, ID USA)
This game is amazing. If you enjoyed the first Assassin’s Creed then you’ll be blown away at how much better this one is. The game play is fun, challenging, and with the new aspects of different weapons and more controls, this game doesn’t get old. You’ll spends hours playing it, or pick it up for 20 min and do a couple assassinations just to have a quick stress reliever. 5 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 starsTravel through Italy! Meet interesting people! And kill them!   December 12, 2009
    C. R. Swanson (Phoenix)
Ah, Renaissance Italy. A time of great development in theology, culture, art, legal codes and the like. Also, a great time to visit if what you really want to do is run along roof-tops and murder people.

Yes, welcome to “Assassin’s Creed II”, the aptly named sequel to the original “Assassin’s Creed”. I haven’t played that one, but I have played this one, and I gotta say, molto buono!

The game features a lot of wonderful things; from the great eye-candy of places like 15th century Florence, to an engaging plot, excellent voice acting and a nice variety of missions.

The story concerns young Enzio, an Italian lad from a reasonably well-off Florentine banking family. Bad Things wind up happening which force him to go on the run. He learns, from a variety of teachers, including a prostitute (?!), how to become an assassin so that he can get revenge against those who have wronged him! Along the way he picks up all sorts of new weapons, many of them assembled with the help of a young artist named Leonardo…

The most fun part of the game for me is running along the rooftops, parkour-style. Rooftop-fighting can be interesting, if somewhat shorter than you might like at times, as your enemies have an annoying tendancy to fall to their deaths rather than letting you gack them.

Also, be careful not to fall yourself! I fell off a very tall building at one point, but landed on a monk, so that was ok. My shoes weren’t even damaged! He saved my sole.

One slightly amusing thing: you can play the game in several different languages. For fun, I tried playing it in Italian with English subtitles. That worked and was pretty enjoyable, but you only get subtitles with the main dialogue, and not the street sounds. Bummer, that.

I’ve not finished the game yet, but I’ve put in a fair amount of time. There’s nothing in it I care to criticize (aside from that language thing I just mentioned, but that’s so minor, who cares?). I won’t say that it’s perfect, because how can any game be?, but I will say that it’s darn fine and one of the best examples of what video games can be when they really put forth the effort.

2 out of 5 starsWould be a good game, but the controls SUCK!!!   December 12, 2009
    M. Silva (NC)
There’s a lot right about this game. The story is pretty good (save the whole ‘matrix’ rip) and the graphics are great. It really does immerse you in Florence, Venice, and other locations in Italy. The only major problem with the game – THE CONTROLS ARE TERRIBLE!!!! I mean, really, really terrible. And of course it’s a game that requires a lot of finesse on the controls, which is near impossible to achieve. For example, the game requires you to do a lot of running jumps, but the control to jump is the same as the control to sprint, so you have to figure that one out. Same is true for the control to drop and the control to hang on – same button. The ‘free run’ concept is not well executed. You have many missions that involve a race situation, and while trying to speed through crowded street, you find your character running up walls, poles, etc, and grabbing onto ledges, despite your best efforts not to. You can not stop him from doing these things. Very, very frustrating. If the creators had spent half the time on the controls as they did on the story or graphics, it would be a great game. But sadly I’m left wanting to play and ending up incredibly frustrated.

5 out of 5 starsCan’t stop dreaming about the game!   December 10, 2009
    Sarah M. Edwards
They fixed the things that were annoying–like not being able to swim–in Assassin’s Creed I and brought in new weapons. It’s just overall a much more in depth game and I after I stop playing it, I dream about it the entire night!
