Brief intro:
Final Fantasy III is a classic RPG re-envisioned for the Nintendo DS. Players take control of four warriors of light who must journey across the land to uncover the secret to driving back the darkness that threatens to overtake the land. There are over 20 job classes and an uncountable (or at least I’m not going to try to count) number of weapons, magic, and armor to equip to your characters. Chances are the team you use throughout the game won’t be the same as what your friends use. Game play is turn-based, and leveling up is one of the main things you’ll be doing in this game.
What I liked:
This is one of my favorite Final Fantasy games and an all around good RPG. There is a lot of content in this game, and a high amount of character customization. What’s more, the cut scenes in this game really show what the DS can do. I’ve seen people who are not big fans of video games stop what they’re doing to watch one of these scenes. Music is good, but could be a little more varied, still not bad. Most people play a Final Fantasy game for the story, and this game won’t disappoint. It doesn’t have as many twists and turns as a console Final Fantasy story, but you’ll grow to like the characters and your attention won’t be lost as you journey the land. The other thing worth mentioning is that it is a nice, long game. Don’t be surprised to to spend 50 hours on the main game (much more if you’re determined to do EVERYTHING). Really, this game really gives you your money’s worth and then some.
What I didn’t like:
There are some things in this game that sucked. To unlock some of the side quests and one of the character jobs, you have to used this thing called Mognet a certain number of times (mail system between you and your friends). It isn’t bad in theory, but overall it is a tedious task you and your friends will have to grind out over an hour. The problem is is that it is only tedious and not fun to do. It also has to be over wireless Internet. Going wireless between games isn’t an option, so it won’t matter if your friend is in the next room or the next continent. Some people have complained about the difficulty of the game. I’ll admit it does get tough at the end of the game, and I enjoy this as a seasoned player. However, people new to RPGs might benefit from a few extra save points here and there.
Overall:
This is a really great game. You can get a lot out of it. Regardless of its hangups, you’re likely to only complain about them while you’re sitting trying to exploit it with your friends or writing your own blog. Otherwise, this game could easily last you for a few weeks of dedicated play.
