Pitty, festival Planeta Terra e promoção!

Pitty vira videogame

PS3 Sixaxis vs. Wii Wiimote: An Early and Somewhat Premature Comparison

I recently bought a PS3 and have been muddling my way through the unimpressive library of PS3 exclusive titles.  Having had an XB360 since early 2006 and a Wii for nearly as long, the PS3 and I have a lot of time to make up together.

Just recently I rented and beat Heavenly Sword, a “first generation” – meaning one of the first releases – title for the PS3.  As mentioned here and elsewhere on this blog, I have gotten to run through a few titles on the console that heavily use the Wiimote sensor.  When Sony announced the sixaxis controller, critics immediately saw the feature as a gimmick that would try to rival the Wiimote, and pitifully at that.  But now that this faithful critic and all around observer has had a chance to lay hands on both, what’s the verdict?

To emphasize the point, I am only comparing one PS3 game to every Wii game I’ve ever played.  Very unfair odds on either account, but I’ve noticed some very interesting things that have led me to believe there may be a clearer winner than someone may think.

There are two main factors (that I have made up, along with most of the other terms in this article, in my benevolence and wise observance – any resemblance to terms or arguments in existence was unintended or accidental)  in the success of unusual game mechanics.  The first and foremost is the talent, skill, and imagination of the developers, or at least what appears to be the talent, skill, and imagination.  When Assassin’s Creed, a game that hyped the cloak and dagger aspect of the player’s character, allowed only three ways to execute cloak and dagger techniques, otherwise forcing the character to fight enemies rather than evade them, the gimmick actually broke the game’s promise and doomed it to $60 worth of mediocrity.  At first glance, one might see this as evidence of the lack of imagination on the game designer’s part, but Ubisoft claimed that time restraints kept them from building the game they wanted to build, which forced them to put in shoddy achievements/trophies to artificially extend gameplay.  Whether it was the skill of the designers or the interference of other factors, the designers failed to execute the game mechanic well (though I know plenty who would disagree, at least accept this as an example).

The other main factor in the success of unusual game mechanics is fit.  “Does this game mechanic actually fit into the context of the game?” This is where the Wii successfully fails a lot.  Though the most recent game I played on the Wii was Super Smash Brothers Brawl, which smartly made the Wiimote optional and Wiimote gestures even more optional, there are plenty of examples to be found of the Wiimote motion sensor being shoehorned into a game.  Wii games like Raving Rabbids, a party-style title made up of small mini-games, are perfect for Wii controls.  Yet other games, especially third party multi-console releases like Tomb Raider: Underworld, suffer due to the requirement of having the Wiimote gestures featured in games where it doesn’t belong.

Now that I’ve defined what I see as the two factors influencing unusual game mechanics, it’s time to apply them to the PS3 Sixaxis controller and the Wii Wiimote.  Let’s pretend that we’re in a gaming utopia where these two factors have been executed well.  Full of creativity and fit for duty, when put in a ring, which of the two survives?

As I said earlier, the only game that I have played that used the Sixaxis controls extensively was Heavenly Sword.  Because of this and the fact that I beat it yesterday afternoon, it will be the point from which all of my Wiimote comparisons are drawn.  To start, let’s go beyond fit and into the realm of integration.

Integration, or making a mechanic an essential and even desirable facet of gameplay, is something that the Wii usually does fairly well.  In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Link’s bow and arrow are easily used by pointing the Wiimote at the screen and pressing a button.  Granted, it looked nothing at all like shooting a bow, but that is completely beside the point.  The controls had been integrated to a point where their implementation was usually easy and mostly effortless.

In Heavenly Sword, a button mashing beat-em-up that sometimes puts on a flight simulator’s jet pilot’s jumpsuit and runs around the room screaming “raawrrwaeerreeer rat-tat-tat-tat-tat!“, the sixaxis controls are integrated in one instance surprisingly well and in another surprisingly poorly.  In the former pressing and holding square or “x” (depending on context) while handling a long-range weapon will zoom the camera in behind the projectile (this varies among rockets, cannonballs, and arrows, along with a few other extraneous objects thrown in).  While in this zoomed-in state, the player can start tilting the controller, gently driving the projectile (thus the flight sim reference) to the desired destination…sometimes.  This mechanic increasingly becomes more of a skill rather than a cool addition as the game progresses, and this helps with the mechanic’s integration into gameplay.  If the mechanic is mostly optional, then it becomes unnecessary and becomes a forgettable option.  While Heavenly Sword’s projectile-driving, so to speak, is technically optional, the game is nearly impossible without it, as there is no reticule to aim at very small, very far away targets.  The other instance in which the Sixaxis is used but is integrated very poorly is in actual combat.  Some of the combos require shaking the controller at the right moment as part of the combo button chain.  In the heat of battle, it seems silly to try and shake the controller a certain way to pull off a small number of moves that require it.

That last bit about poor integration also hits on another area that is intrinsically tied with the idea of integration – and this is implementation, be it awkward or convenient.  The awkwardness factor of shaking a controller in mid-combat is high, but it is rather small potatoes compared to some of the ways Wii games have integrated Wiimote controls.  I’m not sure if Nintendo forces Wii developers to include Wiimote specific gestures, but if they do, they are certainly the reason for the awkward implementation of the controls within Wii games.  As I mentioned before, this awkwardness is almost a given when it comes to multi-platform releases.

There is a lot to be said for all of these factors, but at its base, it’s all about design.  Depending on the strength of designs, whatever is built on top of it could be as stable as bunker or a house of cards.  Though the Wiimote is no card table, it certainly doesn’t have the foundation for a bunker either.  Because most games require the Wiimote to be held in one hand and its companion nunchuck in the other, the probability that the player’s hand won’t be in the proper starting position is very high, and the Wiimote depends on starting in a certain position, otherwise the controls are off (thus why it’s possible to golf in WiiSports while holding the controller in a number of positions varying from a “ping-pong champion” position to a “holy water flick of the wrist” position).  The Wiimote, while brilliant in its inception and marketability, leaves a lot to be desired.  And woe betide the designer who doesn’t tighten up the controls enough when dealing with the Wiimote – with the combination of card table + cards, the whole thing comes tumbling down.

Yet here, exactly where I thought the Sixaxis would fail, is where the it shines.  I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the reason the Sixaxis controller is closer to a bunker than a card table is because it’s held with two hands. It’s a shame that it might be that simple, but, to put it mathematically, the Wiimote in one hand is to a line through one point as the Sixaxis in two hands is to a line through two points.  A line through one point has infinitely possibilities for its direction, and that causes a lot of unpredictability and instability.  A line through two points has a defined course and has built in stability from those two points.  Or to put it non-mathematical terms, that s*** won’t work unless you’re holding it with two hands.

The Sixaxis integration and implementation in Heavenly Sword isn’t perfect, but not once did I have to “reset” my hands to regain control of the mechanic, where as I have not had a casual gaming experience with the Wiimote that I didn’t have to. I don’t necessarily expect these mechanics to be perfect, and I still think the Wiimote was the best innovation to come out of this generation of console gaming.  But when you’re first to do something, that means that you’ve given people a goal to shoot for and surpass.  The Sixaxis is certainly no Wiimote, not by a long shot, but it offers a few crucial things that the Wiimote, if it had come out a few years later, probably would have had in the bag.

So for now, off of the basis of one PS3 game vs. ten or so Wii games , I have to say that the Sixaxis was the most fun I’ve had with a motion sensing controller so far in this console generation.  There are surely Wii games that integrate these controls far better than I have given them credit for (in fact, if you know of any, please suggest them in the comments – I’m completely willing to revisit this later on), but Heavenly Sword’s use of the Sixaxis mechanic wins this round.

We’ll see how long that lasts.

Fantastic Contraption

This is an oldie, but a goodie. Fantastic contraption lets you build contraptions from wheels and support structures in order to reach your goal of getting the pink ball inside the pink rectangle.

We recently rediscovered this game, and spent an obscene amount of time trying outdo each other creating the most poorly designed machines possible. It’s also available on the iPhone. Here are a few of our attempts:

Cheese or Font!

As someone who has an odd obssession with fonts and a love of food, this seems to be made just for me. The premise is simple: a name is given to you and you have to say if it’s a cheese or a font name.

Some are easy, like cheddar, wingdings, gouda and Times New Roman while others are slightly more challenging and by slightly, I mean I have no idea.

Farnaz and Faricy – one’s a font, one’s a food. But neither of them are in Wikipedia so I’ll never know the truth! (According to Google, Farnaz is a font and Faricy is a car dealership in Colorado.)

Try your luck at Cheese or Font!

Via Láctea

“Ora (direis) ouvir estrelas! Certo

Perdeste o senso”! E eu vos direi, no entanto,

Que, para ouvi-las, muita vez desperto

E abro as janelas, pálido de espanto…

E conversamos toda a noite, enquanto

A via láctea, como um pálio aberto,

Cintila.

Direis agora! “Tresloucado amigo!

Que conversas com elas? Que sentido

Tem o que dizem, quando estão contigo?”

E eu vos direi: “Amai para entendê-las:

Pois só quem ama pode ter ouvido

Capaz de ouvir e de entender estrelas”.

Xbox 360 Pro Console 60GB with 2 Bonus Games

Where to start? I’ve always played my cousins PS3 since it has come out all the good games warhawk/resistance/Cod4/MotorStorm etc. But I really liked the 360 since all the Star Wars games come out for it and most of the good RPG’s Oblivion/FableII/Lego Star Wars etc. The game selection is just sheer brilliance so is the PS3 but the 360 has games that suit what I like playing much more.

I ordered from Amazon 10/19/08 and had a little bit of difficulty with UPS delivering my package so it is not fault of Amazon it got here today 10/23/08 when it was suppose to come 10/21/08. When I started unpacking the 360 i saw it was sealed in plastic ontop of a piece of cardboard. The box was big enough for the 360 to shake around though. Brings everything Amazon described and I’m actually happy Amazon is up to date with it’s 360’s my was manufactured on 9-11-08 may be a Jasper or Falcon whichever it is, It runs much quieter then the first 20GB 360 I bought off Ebay which was from 2006 horribly loud machine it RROD seconds when I unpacked it though I blame it being old pretty old and plain bad luck.

I’ve been playing Soul Calibur IV with my cousin and we are hooked. The 360 comes with 48.8GB free of space from it’s advertised 60GB because of demos installed and such. It’s VERY quiet when your not playing a game so you can play music and whatever without it overcoming the music that you have to raise the volume to cancel it out. Even then it’s still un-noticeable unless you mute the TV but it’s just . So far I love the interface it’s great but I personally prefer the PS3’s a little bit more organized and simpler.

Controllers are fantastic much better feeling then PS3 controllers and have more weight to it which is a plus adds to it’s durability. Though i have a small complaint with the Xbox360 ingame keyboard arranged in ABCDEFG instead of the traditional keyboard… if anyone knows how to change that comment please . The 360 came with a 175Watt brick but that doesn’t mean it can’t *possibly* be a Jasper re-model if a computer only needs 125w doesn’t mean the 175w/203w can’t feed it. The Lego game is actually very fun and the Kungfu panda game reminds me of the old Spyro games on the PS2. I really recommend you buy the Xbox360 from Amazon if you are indeed looking out for one, you can be sure it’s a recent model from September unlike other stores where you’d have to hunt for them.

Setelah memainkan semua jalurnya kesimpulan sakaagari huurricane cukup menarik buat pengisi waktu luang nih.

Old Mans Review of the Nintendo Wii Game System

It’s true, I’m an old timer. Approaching 60 years old. That doesn’t mean I’m dead though. Not yet anyway. I’ve always enjoyed video games starting waaaay back with the original Atari 2600, and early Nintendo game systems such as the SNES. Well,, Game, some things never change. A good game back then is probably still a good game. Every year the systems get more advanced particularly the memory and graphics. Some of the new, Game, systems are almost too graphic intense for me. I don’t need to see every texture, every blade of grass, to have a good time. In 2006, Nintendo released the Wii system and my daughter got one for Christmas. The Wii was a unique, Game, system mostly due to its controller, a very sensitive remote control device. This device is very accurate and is a pleasure to use, Game, in many games. The game itself can use the Wiimote in a number of ways. It can be held in different directions such as pointing a flashlight, or sideways like a bicycle handle. There are several controls on the Wiimote including a directional pad, buttons, and a trigger type button under the Wiimote. The Wiimote makes this system unique and offers great interactive, Game, wireless control. Some other interesting features of the Wii, Game, are its ability to play older Nintendo games, such as GameCube games, as well as older Nintendo 64 games and even SNES games, Game, through the virtual channel. This is a big move in the right direction as far as I’m concerned, because it’s nice to not abandon the older games for newer models. The Wii also connects wired, or wireless to the internet, and to Nintendo. This allows for many, Game, other features, Game, on the system including browsing the Internet, and the download of “Wiiware” games. There are also channels on the Wii for photo applications, news, weather and more. To top off all of this, the Nintendo at its release, was one of the most inexpensive game systems of its, Game, day. It has become the most popular game system of all time. Many of the games, Game, for the Wii are centered around its controller. It comes with a sports, Game, game pack that features bowling, tennis and other games. In these games the Wiimote is used as one would use the bowling ball, or a tennis racquet. One must be a bit careful when doing this,, Game, not to throw the Wiimote through the TV screen. Nintendo addresses this by attaching a wrist strap to the Wiimote, and reminds players during the game to use the straps..Bowling is a particular all around favorite of many generations. Most people young or old enjoy this accurate representation, Game, of the real thing. There are a large amount of games available for the Wii. Many of them are sports oriented games, driving games; puzzle type games, and even shooter games. One of my favorite games for the Wii, is Resident Evil 4, a first person shooter. (Not bad for an old guy?). In this game the wiimote is used as a gun, rifle, or knife, while the nunchuck controller is used to walk around. I won’t go into RE’s game play at depth at this point because it is definitely deserving of its own review. The first time I saw the game, I thought it would not be my, Game, type of game. It features, Game, some very gross and violent scenes, although the artwork is exceptional. When you shoot a zombie like character in the head, or kick him in the head, it explodes in what sounds like a ripe melon exploding. But once you get over these gross things, the game is very engaging to say the least. The Wiimote makes using a rifle, gun or knife very realistic. Its rather amusing to see someone playing the game, sitting on a chair slashing away with the wiimote.RE4 also includes some clever and stylish puzzle like activity. All in all, I’d have to say it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played on any system, but the Wiimote really makes it much more enjoyable. It takes many many hours to complete this game, and it is a lot of fun. Strangely enough, this is also one of the most inexpensive games for the Wii. The soundtrack, beautiful animation and excellent game play make this a must, for the Wii player. I also enjoy a game called Smooth Moves which, Game, really makes use of the Wiiremote which is referred to as a “baton” in this game. In this game you are playing hundreds of micro games, trying to do simple things like opening a bottle, driving, hammering a nail, all in split seconds. Another big boost for the Wii is a game called Wii-Fit. This is a virtual, Game, exercise and fitness trainer that has become quite popular. This game gives the viewer a workout as he completes various strength and posture exercises. Wii-Fit if properly done will definitely improve your, Game, fitness level. I recommend the Wii to many people, young and old as a great addition to their home entertainment. Take it from an old man, its lots of fun, and Wii should all never underestimate the importance of fun.

Brierley's back in the game

IT’S a little known and, to some, surprising fact that septuagenarian business knight Ron Brierley once won a most-beautiful-baby competition in Wellington before going on to hone his entrepreneurial skills as a stamp trader at school.

Decades later, the chairman of activist investor Guinness Peat Group is again starting to show a similar level of urgency to the debt collection notices he used to send — under the impressive moniker of Kiwi Stamp Company — to the nonplussed parents of late-paying students.

GPG, in this month alone, has lobbed two takeovers: one for the 19.9 per cent-owned agricultural business Tandou, which has morphed into a trader of water rights; and the other for the 70 per cent of wealth manager MMC Contrarian that it does not already own.

The latter play has pitted Sir Ron against Melbourne internet entrepreneur and 5.6 per cent MMC holder Nicholas Bolton, who famously extracted $4.5 million from construction giant Leighton earlier this year by threatening to wind up the Airport Link toll road project in Brisbane.

If Sir Ron, now 72, had not been in Britain and unavailable for comment, he would no doubt chafe at any suggestion that Bolton, in his late 20s, deserves to be mentioned in the same breath.

In any event, the recent spate of activity by GPG, albeit at the small-cap end of the scale, has enlivened speculation of a serious comeback by the 1980s corporate raider.

Long-time lieutenant Gary Weiss is far more circumspect.

He acknowledges that the quick procession of offers for Tandou as well as MMC — valued at $68m by GPG’s 48c per share offer — has created the impression of “heightened activity”.

“Certainly, as the economic environment has stabilised, we have been able to refocus our attention on working our portfolio for both (asset) realisations and enhancing existing positions, while also actively looking for new investment opportunities,” Weiss says.

GPG has a bit of work to do on that score — a situation that is certainly not lost on analysts in his country of birth.

The Brierley aura, built around the audacious investment style of GPG antecedents Brierley Investments (BIL) and Industrial Equity in the 1980s and 1970s, still counts for a lot with retail investors.

However, First NZ Capital Securities analyst Greg Main cites an array of institutional concerns about GPG, not least its pound stg. 24m ($44m) loss for the June half year, which was admittedly an improvement from the previous pound stg. 42m loss.

“There’s a perception Sir Ron has lost a bit of his Midas touch, the institutional market has grown a bit weary of management, and there’s a view that GPG overreached with its Coats investment, just like BIL did with Thistle Hotels in the UK,” Main says. “And there’s still a lot of cash ($615m) in the group.

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing but there have been a lot of company recapitalisations, and you could make a case for GPG to have taken out a couple of targets. Of course, when you’re in the middle of it, you always think the asset will be cheaper tomorrow.”

The $543m holding in British-based Coats, a global supplier of sewing thread to the apparel and other industries, dominates the diverse $1.94 billion GPG portfolio.

The realisation of the investment in Coats, which was hit by a dramatic collapse in global demand in the last quarter of last year due to the economic crisis, will be the ultimate test for GPG, according to Main.

Weiss concedes that Coats is a significant investment, and has taken longer than expected to turn around.

“But we believe much of the turnaround work of this world-class company has already been effected, and as Coats’s markets recover, we expect the earnings of the business will demonstrate the substantial progress which has been achieved,” he says.

Sir Ron has seen the business cycle turn many times before, sometimes with unexpected results.

His most formidable achievement was to build BIL from scratch into New Zealand’s largest company — a feat recognised by his fellow directors in 1986, at the company’s 25th annual meeting, with a video tribute that included snatches of the Hallelujah Chorus. They were probably only half-joking.

A year later, however, the cycle turned, and viciously so, with the collapse of global markets. The curtain abruptly fell on an era when Sir Ron had been bracketed with other corporate raiders such as Robert Holmes a Court, Larry Adler and John Spalvins of Adelaide Steamship Co. The final ignominy was a BIL palace coup in 1990 that forced him out.

As he exited, however, Sir Ron negotiated a transition that installed him as chairman of GPG — an unwanted cashbox in BIL’s top-heavy portfolio that had enjoyed better days as a British merchant bank. BIL facilitated the parting of ways by selling its GPG holding to retail investors. Sir Ron, then, was back in control, albeit with “limited funds and no scope for extravagance”, as he later admitted.

The formula has not changed much over the years: seek out undervalued companies with turnaround potential, and then agitate from the sidelines or in-house. If the target board is intransigent, go public.

A classic example in July was CSR, in which GPG has a 4.7 per cent interest. Valued at more than $100m, the CSR stake is by far the company’s biggest holding in a portfolio that includes aluminium fabricator Capral, homebuilder AV Jennings, Babcock & Brown Power, Capilano Honey and the last surviving Adsteam unit, Tooth & Co. Across the Tasman, GPG’s 35 per cent stake in the Tower financial group is slightly bigger.

Weiss excoriated CSR’s directors at the annual meeting for making no real attempt to explore GPG’s proposal for a demerger of the sugar business, as well as the sale of its aluminium interests. Instead, CSR had proceeded with an inferior proposal, also to demerge, according to GPG.

In recognition of the task ahead, Sir Ron has revised his plans for retirement, which was to coincide with a substantial return of value to GPG shareholders next year. The chairman said last month it was now not possible to adhere to the 2010 timetable, as another “poor” result was expected for the year to December.

“Sharemarket conditions have greatly improved in recent months, but we anticipate further repercussions from the credit crisis, with opportunities to emerge which will be more favourable than overinvesting (now),” Sir Ron said. If ever there was a signal to watch this space, that was undoubtedly it.

There's a Reason We Love Computer Games

Video computer games have become as much a pillar of our entertainment universe as books and movies. Why is it that so many of us are drawn to the computer monitor or TV screen like flies? A bit of history might help explain the phenomenon.Originally computers were all work and no play, being outrageously expensive to build and operate. But computer engineers, Computer, and designers, being overgrown kids after all, soon began to get comfortable with their big room-filling machines. In their idle hours it occurred to them that it might be kind of cool to have the computer show some spaceships and planets cruising around the galaxy. An in the 1960s a group of fun-loving computer geniuses created SpaceWar, the father of the famous arcade game Astroids. These games were well received by geniuses and regular folks alike, which motivated the geniuses to design some more fun stuff. They could have used the computers for a lot of diversions, but somehow the visual element of the games activated the imagination. Over time we got Pong, PacMan and a continually evolving string of games, including software that eventually could beat chess masters at their own game.By the late, Computer, 1980s computer games software was getting quite sophisticated, with the invention of Sim City. This product expanded on what was going on through all the previous games; the players were being drawn into an imaginary world. Not unlike books and movies, these video games were very satisfying mentally. Sim City actually allowed the user to create amazing cities and even worlds. Also in the 1980s, a group of computer programmers began creating software that would show moving images all generated by computer. The images started out very simple, almost like stick figures but they could dance in time to a music track. No skin, no facial features but it was very exciting to think what might come with more powerful computers. The computing power, Computer, grew exponentially and, over 20 years, we now have not only some fabulout computer generated movie, Computer, effects and, Computer, whole characters,, Computer, but the realism of video games has taken a quantum leap forward.A good video game will draw you, Computer, in to another world and, unlike a book or movie, a computer game will offer an interactive, Computer, experience. In fact, at least one computer game has become sufficiently popular to become an action movie; think Mario Brothers. But it’s funny that sometimes a simple game can, Computer, be as entertaining as a much more sophisticated game. Some of the, Computer,, Computer, most, Computer, beloved games of all are Tetris (stack those blocks), Pac Man and Pong.A modern computer will still do a great job of playing state-of-the-art video games. There are hundreds of options, including many that pit you online against other players. Then there are the specialty consoles like PlayStation, Nintendo and XBox360. With tricked-out controllers, guitars and wands, you can really develop some hand-eye coordination by, Computer, playing many of the current titles. One of the most fun educational games is Roller Coaster Tycoon, where you build your own amusement park and then operate it with “real” guests making decisions, Computer, about which, Computer, rides to take. If a guest loses their lunch on a roller coaster you’d better have a custodian clean it up or the guests will stay away. You must watch income and expenses and save money to build more attractions. This is a great game. But the bottom line as to why we’re, Computer, so enamored with computer games software is that it captures our imagination in a variety of interactive ways. Our games are prized possessions and it is wise to treat them carefully to make them last.

Nintendo oficializa queda de preo do Wii

Game Review - World of Warcraft

Platform: PC

*Sigh

Where do I begin?

If you have ever played an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), you know how much fun it can be. But let me tell you, your whole perspective of the gameplay gets totally re-written when you play this game. It is unlike any other game, regardless of the genre.

Let me go through the basics for you: You start out by picking either Horde or Alliance, this is what faction your character is in. The two factions are at war with each other, so you can not speak to another player in a different faction or trade with them or do any stuff that you can do with people of your own faction. You can only kill them.. but i wont get into that for now.

Anyways, within each faction there are 4 races to choose from. Alliance has Human, Gnome, Dwarf, and Nightelf, (and Draenei if you have the expansion pack). Horde has Troll, Undead, Orc, and Tauren, (and Bloodelf if you have the expansion pack). You also pick with class your character is, for example you can be a Hunter, specializing with taming beasts, and bows. Or a warlock, specializing with demonology, and shadow magic. Each class has it’s unique abilities and skills, and you can not change from one class to another once you start your character (but you can make multiple characters).

Once you create your character, you are submersed into a world that is totally unique to the Warcraft Series. You level up your character by doing quests or slaying monsters. You can purchase equipment, or weaponry, or even beasts to ride on (once you reach level 30). You can choose 2 professions, which will be the major source of your money. You can also auction items off on the in-game auction house, and purchase others’ auctions.

The game itself cost $20 for the original, $30 for the first expansion, and $40 for the 2nd expansion. After that, you pay $15 each month, but take it from me – this is by far the most entertaining investment i have ever made, and i am sure that you will agree if you decide to play it.

Bottom Line – Buy it

Misanthropy and game

This is a more detailed follow-up to yesterday’s post. Go read it now, if you haven’t already.

A little over a week ago, MisAnDrope e-mailed me asking about the highlighted bit on my About page:

Conservative in politics, anarchist in nature, libertine by necessity, misanthropic by choice.

He didn’t think my writings were misanthropic enough to merit a poetic mention. Well, I am here to prove I am not a poser, but a full-bore, credentialed misanthrope.

First, a definition, from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:

Main Entry: mis·an·thro·py

Pronunciation: \mi-ˈsan(t)-thrə-pē\

Function: noun

Date: 1625

: a hatred or distrust of humankind

There are two varieties of misanthropy, differentiated from the feelings from which they spring. The first, and most common form of misanthropy springs from fear. It is an active form of loathing that comes from being a loser in life. These misanthropes are glorified whiners who are bitter at the world for not giving them their due, recognizing their genius, or whatever petty contrivance they can whip up in their demented brain-boxes. A not insignificant number of them are social retards. Even worse, these mental pygmies expend energy and emotion on the misery of their fellow man. Alex Birch sums up this breed of misanthropy perfectly:

Misanthropy, while some of the motivations might have factual backing, is a sentimental attitude adopted by people who share more fear than hate for humans, because if they really saw people as useless, they’d thrive socially to at least make some use of them instead of just complaining like alienated losers.

A real-life example of this sort of misanthrope is “philosopher” Slavoj Žižek (hat tip: Martin Regnen), who was interviewed in the Guardian back in July:

What makes you depressed?
Seeing stupid people happy.

What do you owe your parents?
Nothing, I hope. I didn’t spend a minute bemoaning their death.

What does love feel like?
Like a great misfortune, a monstrous parasite, a permanent state of emergency that ruins all small pleasures.

What is your favourite smell?
Nature in decay, like rotten trees.

What is the worst job you’ve done?
Teaching. I hate students, they are (as all people) mostly stupid and boring.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
That life is a stupid, meaningless thing that has nothing to teach you.

I admit not knowing a whole lot about Žižek, but reading this interview makes me want to not know about him at all, as he comes off as a loathsome, pathetic insect. The man is transparently invested in other people’s misfortune, delighting when the most dejected of humans are suffering and becoming depressed when they aren’t. I’m not fond of idiots or fools, but I don’t walk around rubbing my palms and cackling with glee when I see one slipping up. The rest of the answers are slightly gussied-up cries of angst, the sort of thing you’d expect from an emo teenager who, despite living in a wealthy suburb and having well-off, doting parents (as all emo punks do), listens to My Chemical Romance, slits his wrists with a boxcutter, and bitches and cries about how horrible his life is and how existence is pointless. You’d wonder why Žižek and all of these clowns who think life is “stupid” or some variation thereof don’t just off themselves and save us from having to listen to their complaining, if it weren’t for the fact that they’re collectively as yellow as a bowl of piss.

Mr. Regnen sums up his opinion of Slavoj Žižek thusly:

To begrudge stupid people what little happiness they get in their lives and then get depressed over it yourself takes a real fucking shithead.

Gregory House is a stylized, cleaned-up fictional version of this variety of misanthrope. Depicting a real misanthrope on national television would be impossible because, as is shown by Žižek, they’re unpleasant creatures. As a result, House is given redeeming characteristics – he is a ludicrously gifted doctor, and as Bhetti noted, many women find him attractive in spite of his assholery. However, House is certifiably socially autistic, an unfortunate side effect of having a high IQ. That, combined with his bad leg, makes him into a resentful, spiteful individual who toys with, bullies, and manipulates people for the thrill of it. As Wilson remarked at the end of the first episode of Season 5:

You spread misery because you can’t feel anything else. You manipulate people because you can’t handle any kind of real relationship, and I’ve enabled it. For years, the games, the binges, the middle-of-the-night phone calls…

And as Obsidian remarked, House goes without romantic companionship due to his antisocial personality:

Which brings me to House himself. Yea, he’s brilliant-he’s also ALONE. No one wants to be around him anymore than they absolutely has to, including his obstensible best friend…And as we who learn and study Game know, House-types rarely if ever get laid in real life-theyre too smart to get away with being the kind of assholes Women actually want, much less like. His only option is the Bunny Ranch.

Put simply, these types of men are poor in character, and not in a sexy way.

Now we come to misanthrope type number two, the group in which I claim membership. These misanthropes are rarer, and saner. Our misanthropy is derived from calculated indifference, not fear. Individuals like myself don’t go around fantasizing about the various ways in which we’d like to see humanity fail, because we simply don’t give a damn about those small-minded things. Furthermore, this misanthropy isn’t the product of being an outcast and a failure, but merely being alive and observant. It comes from being punched in the face, both literally and metaphorically. It’s the result of realizing that the world in its state is out to screw you in more ways than one, and reacting accordingly.

An example of a misanthrope in this mold is France’s most reviled man of letters, Louis-Ferdinand Céline. Anyone who knows the literary origins of my pseudonym, either by reading Céline’s novels (and shame on you if you haven’t) or by Googling, has an idea of what I’m getting at. The overwhelming majority of Céline’s fiction was based on his life experiences, though like any worthwhile storyteller, he was a master bullshitter and knew how to exaggerate things in a way to captivate people. Journey to the End of the Night was a retelling of Céline’s early life, told through his author surrogate Ferdinand Bardamu, relating his adventures in World War I, French West Africa, the U.S., and post-war France. From Alex Birch’s excellent review:

The novel is a half-fictional, half-biographic work, starting out in an increasingly nervous France, where the main character Bardamu lives. Living a quiet university life, indifferent to the world around him, Bardamu one day sits at a café with his friend Arthur, joking about and demeaning the every day life in France, when the two gentlemen suddenly hear the sound of a military parade outside. Bardamu, excited and stoked from the lively conversation, decides to join the parade in an attempt to mock its pretentiousness. The absurdity of the situation appears when Bardamu finds himself caught in the event, not able to escape. The next thing he knows, he’s standing at the frontline of war, crouching under gunfire from angry Germans. Suddenly Bardamu is at the very center of a World War.

Bardamu’s tone throughout the novel is one of wry indifference. He is a normal person, capable of interacting with others on a normal level, and even falls in love with a woman during his time in America (a prostitute, to be sure, but I never held him up as a model of alphatude). While misanthropic, he remains above the targets of his derision by leavening everything with humor, such that the book is a hysterical read. Additionally, rather than picking on the weak and defenseless, as fearful misanthropes do, Bardamu aims his scorn at the insane, nonsensical social and cultural configuration of the post-war West. An example from the novel that I posted earlier:

There was quite a commotion. Some people said: “That young fellow’s an anarchist, they’ll shoot him, the sooner the better . . . Can’t let the grass grow under our feet with a war on! . . . But there were others, more patient, who thought I was syphilitic and sincerely insane, they consequently wanted me to be locked up until the war was over or at least for several months, because they, who claimed to be sane and in their right minds, wanted to take care of me while they carried on the war all by themselves. Which proves that if you want people to think you’re normal there’s nothing like having an all-fired nerve. If you’ve got plenty of nerve, you’re all set, because then you’re entitled to do practically anything at all, you’ve got the majority on your side, and it’s the majority who decide what’s crazy and what isn’t.

It is this that distinguishes the second type of misanthrope from the first. The Slavoj Žižeks of the world are chickenshit pansies who, as Riff Dog might say, “kick around cats” – the Louis-Ferdinand Célines kick around the people in power.

But what does this have to do with game? Trumwill recently posted a lengthy analysis of Funny People that had this perceptive passage:

On that last one, excessive passivity is a problem. If you play a good doormat, people will see you as a doormat. If you never ask a girl out, you’re almost never going to go out with a girl. If you never make the move for sex, you’re rarely going to get sex. Unfortunately, a lot of passive people read things like this and think, in a self-congratulatory sort of way, that the problem is that they’re too nice. Or that if they were less nice that they would have more success. At that point, it depends on what you consider “nice”. But most guys that can’t get laid being nice and passive also have problems if they decide to become jerks. I know a lot of romantically lonely jerks. At this point in my life, far more lonely jerks than nice guys. [emphasis mine - ed.]

As I wrote over at Hit Coffee:

That’s the money passage, Trumwill. The thing here is that a lot of those “nice guys” were nice solely out of a desire for sex. These men are prone to becoming jerks out of spite, and no one finds spite attractive. New wrapper, same core.

Additionally, back in January, Roissy posted on asshole game, writing this:

There are genuine assholes who are loved, and there are spiteful assholes who get nowhere. The difference is crucial.

Uncaring asshole = success with women.

Caring asshole = failure with women.

When women say they don’t fall for assholes, they are thinking of the second kind. A caring asshole comes from a place of bitterness and spite. His assholery is reactive rather than proactive. He is poor at calibrating which women will be responsive to his dick attitude. Caring assholes are crassly insulting and transparently invested in the outcome of their game.

Uncaring assholes are assholes as a consequence of their indifference. It is the aloofness of the man she loves that drives women crazy with obsession*, and that aloofness is manifest as asshole behavior. An uncaring asshole demonstrates clearly in his body language and tone of voice, not to mention his dearth of words, that he could take her or leave her.

Being a misanthrope is basically taking assholery to its logical conclusion. The question is, are you a mean-minded, spiteful cat-kicker, or are you an indifferent, aloof, confident a-hole? Learning the core principles of game, with its demolition of lies about male and female sexuality, is already a big step in the direction of Céline. Cat-kicker thinking has no place in game, and will result in your failure in the mating dance. Being a misanthrope and successful with women requires you to stop being a small-minded dickhead and aim your ire at bigger, worthier targets.

For concrete examples of “positive misanthropy”, here’s some excerpts from the first part of Martin Regnen’s brilliant guide on how to be an asshole:

Practice your laugh. You need to be able to both smirk and cackle obnoxiously without coming off like a B-movie villain or the fat kid from the Simpsons. This is very important. You don’t want to be a gloomy miserable asshole who never smiles, but a happy asshole who loves being better than everyone else.

Pick your targets. Don’t be an asshole to your grandmother or to small children. Don’t be too much of an asshole to people you have actual power over. The best people to use your full range of asshole skills on are your bosses and attractive young women.

Be confident. You want people to know that you’re an asshole because you’re so great that you can get away with it. Confidence is key. Without confidence you look like an angry basement-dwelling loser who might as well be an asshole because no one ever liked you in the first place anyway.

And from the second part:

Never show irritation. You irritate other people. Other people amuse you. Even if this is not true, make it look like it is.

Look good. Good-looking people get away with much more. Of course there’s only so much you can do, but be in good physical shape and dress like someone successful. If you don’t want to dress like an adult, this is where I suppose expensive thugwear can come in handy.

And with that, I bid you adieu.

Baiklah, segera kita mulai hitungan mundurnya…..

10

Fiolina Germi
(Metal Slug X)

First Lady of Fighting Games”. First Lady of Fighting Games”

6

Lara Croft
(Tomb Raider)

Indiana Jones memang menarik.

2

Zelda
(The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess)

Kesalahannya dalam menjaga Ocarina of Time menjadikannya begitu terpukul dan sangat bersedih.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's Portable - The Battle of Aces

This I actually discovered the night before I left for my hometown last week but since I wasn’t around during the weekends so I didn’t get to post about it then.

Apparently, there will be a Nanoha game coming out for the PSP! An official Nanoha game, FINALLY!!! And it won’t be some boring cheap sim exploit like what happened to the PS2 Night Wizard game (damn that series had potential for a game but they just had to screw it)! It looks kind of like Magical Battle Arena (aka Nanoha done right) with more solid graphics and some really neat effects, I particularly like how they made the smoke look opaque and the laser beams look fancier. It is based on Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A’s, the second season of the series and it’ll feature a list of characters from that particular timeline (meaning no StrickerS are in characters like kungfu rollerskater Subaru or gunner Teanna or loli dragon summoner Caro or the wmd loli Vivio or eye patch loli Cinque or what not) including such like Signum, Shamal, Zafira, and some other still yet undisclosed but the silhouette in the trailer suggests Hayate, Chrono, original Reinforce, and some other that I can’t seem to recall will be in there as well. This will be awesome~

It’ll be out on the 21st of January next year… oh the wait… u_u

But then again, A’s is something from 4 years ago. I understand that it is probably a marketing stint for the upcoming Nanoha silver screen debut (which opens two days after this game is released), even A’s will be having a rerun in Japan on October. Oh marketing.

They better make a game for StrikerS and Soundstage X after this or I’ll RRRRRRAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEE

از بازیهای محبوب و معروف این سبک میشه به بازی های empire : total war , end war , civiization revolution , dawn of war , red alert , halo wars و …

Lol, I'm alive?

Here I am again, it’s like every time I’m reminded of old blogs, I get into the mood of posting. Actually, it was a friend of mine who showed me an old site she had to do for high school (before i entered that school anyways). It was kinda old school, which was amusing, but it was good for something made like, 4 years ago? Moving on, there were links to some blogs, then old photos and drawings lol… which reminded me once again of my old one. Visited it again, dead links for the images. Haha. Mine may not have had any images, but it sure did have a whole lot of crap posted in it. Sure is amusing, seeing those things I’ve been posting in the past.

Hmm, well, I’ve totally skipped over a term. Funny how i never found time for blogging during the times when classes were suspended. A week for that darned swine flu. Then some time for typhoons. I guess my mind was occupied with random things. Either that, or I wasn’t feeling lonely enough to blog. Well… I think that was when I started to play SMT Online with a few friends? Meh, doesn’t really matter why.

Anyway, I’ve been slacking off these past few days, and I’m destined for more slacking of tomorrow, well, later. I was reading Artemis Fowl for 2 days in a row, starting last Friday, finishing a book per day. Not like each book’s that long, but it *is* rare for me to pick up a book these days. The last two books were okay, but I’d have to say that I liked the previous ones more… Or maybe I should go and reread the first three ones just to make sure… maybe when I get more time in my hands… or when I feel like it.

I’ve been sleeping during “early” in the morning for the last… 2 or 3 weeks? It’s does feel nice sleeping ’till afternoon, but it’s such a waste of daylight. And because of that, I don’t really feel like working on the things that I need to do for school. ‘Cause by the time I feel like getting up and eat “brunch”, I go and think “Meh, It’s too late for school work, maybe tomorrow…” Such a diligent student huh? Well, good thing it’s a holiday later… and I only have one thing to do for Tuesday…

Oh yeah, a friend of mine made me a Facebook account like.. last month? Two months ago? One of those. Well, I got addicted to the games… well, Mafia Wars and Restaurant City, easily got tired of the latter, but I think it’ll be a while before I leave my mafia alone. It’s like playing that browser game that we used to play, Ikariam… Well, it’s kinda good though, I didn’t check it for most of the day~ Kind of a miracle, with the way I’ve been kind of guarding it… But then, It really wasn’t any kind of breakthrough, cause I’ve been playing Dissidia for the whole day (well, what remained of it) instead. I only trained one character, well, Zidane, started at around level 65, ended at a 100. Then got him some nice equipment. Now, if only I can focus like so on my school work… And this is why I must usually deprive myself of games, I never get anything done. Well, not like the invention of the internet helps… Well, it’s probably just my general lack of self-control… which sucks. Then Persona 1 for the PSP’s going to come out tomorrow! Never played it, so I guess I might get hooked…

And how can I forget Persona 3 Portable for the PSP, coming out in November?! Well, it’s going to be the japanese version, not like I’m going to wait. It’s so “KYAAAAA” worthy! And I want to know soon how the female main character’s story is going to evolve~ It looks like Akihiko’s going to be an S.Link~ and as I’ve been telling people, I want my Akihiko shower scene! XD~ A lot to rave about really… But I’ll stop.

Btw, found the P4 drama CD, with translations. Lucky find? But not as lucky as finding the Radio Genso Suikoden Dramas. Came across it while looking at japanese voice actors. Well, Wild Arms ones specifically (the 4 main characters of Wild Arms 3, well their voice actors all had roles in Naruto, I can almost imagine them as ninjas now. Haha.) Anyway, Suiko Drama, I’ve only reached episode 5, but I’ll need to relisten to 3-5 so I can understand more clearly. Though, since I played Suikoden 1 again recently, it wasn’t that hard to remember the events… which is a good thing.

Meh, anyway, I guess I should sleep. School’s coming again soon, I should really, really condition my body to sleep earlier.

Woman, Women, and Perhaps some Game for the Ladies (although not much)

It’s Saturday morning (or at least it was when I started writing this post). During my lie-in I thought a bit about this new girl, among other things. She’s still in Australia until, I think, later today or this evening. (She said Saturday and I inquired no further.) My thoughts went something like this:

1: Psychologists have found that what they call “High Self-Monitors” are less fulfilled in their relationships, and their partners are often ignorant about their dissatisfaction,

“High self-monitors are social chameleons,” says Northwestern University researcher Michael E. Roloff. “And, because they’re quick to pick up on social cues, are socially adept and unlikely to say things upsetting to others, they are generally well-liked and sought after…

But there’s a downside for high self-monitors when it comes to their romantic relationships. “High self-monitors may appear to be the kind of people we want to have relationships with, but they themselves are less committed to and less happy in their relationships than low self-monitors”…

“The desire to alter one’s personality to appropriately fit a given situation or social climate prevents high self-monitors from presenting their true selves during intimate interactions with their romantic partners,” says Roloff. “High self-monitors are very likeable and successful people. However, it appears they’re just not deep.”

Their propensity to self-censor prompts them to avoid face-threatening interactions that more honest self-disclosures potentially provide. The result: the partners of high self-monitors may be completely in the dark about the extent of their high self-monitoring partner’s degree of commitment and regard.

Conversely, the researchers found that low self-monitors — people who are the least concerned with social appropriateness and are unlikely to mask their feelings or opinions to avoid confrontation or preserve their self-image — are more committed to and more satisfied with their relationships.

(Source stolen from a post of Paul’s which I don’t want to link in the interest of not having my post displayed in an annoying ping-back.)

My own experience corroborates this. This new girl, though, is quite obviously a low or moderate self-monitor. (As am I, as far as I can tell.) She certainly does not go out of her way to agree with people. (Within the boundaries of what’s socially apposite.) This, I suppose, is a good sign. Especially when I remember the last girl I was involved with who was a pathological social chameleon.

It is unfortunate that such empty people keep us so besotted:

There are women who have no inner life wherever one looks for it, being nothing but masks. That man is to be pitied who lets himself in with such ghostly, necessarily unsatisfying creatures; but just these women are able to stimulate man’s desire most intensely: he searches for their souls – and searches on and on.

– Nietzsche, Human, All Too Human, “Woman and Child”

Although I think this probably goes for men as well.

2 – A bit of Game which can be used by females: While this girl has been away, she has updated her Facebook status probably four times, each one being about how fun her vacation is. This is attractive. If she were saying some bullshit about how she misses everyone and wants to come home, that would not be attractive at all. What she’s doing now displays that she lives in her own self-sufficient world and doesn’t need to lean on anyone else for her satisfaction. This is sexy. Any girls who might be reading ought to create this perception in any guy they are interested in. (She’s not creating this perception deliberately, I’m pretty sure. But creating it deliberately would work well for women who aren’t naturally inclined this way.)

3 – Nature Not-So Red in Tooth and Claw: Often the way PUAs talk about women you’d think the lot of them (or at least the attractive ones) are complete peahens, coldly and callously evaluating, calculating, judging and eliminating like Simon Cowell. It is just not this bad. Moreover, a lot of their reserve comes not from feelings of your inferiority, but plainly because women are naturally more cautious than men. This, of course, is what the “comfort phase” is for; but this reasoning for the comfort phase isn’t explicated enough and I believe probably adds to the lack of confidence so many men battle with in their dealings with women.

Women – including hot women – aren’t necessarily not contacting you because you’ve not demonstrated enough Alpha. They too wonder if you like them and if they might be embarrassing themselves by conveying too much enthusiasm. They too wonder if you enjoyed the sex. They too, just like you, are only trying to get by and are only hoping to be approved of by others – including you.

PSP Go Graphic Chip

ACLU: Prayer At Football Game Unconstitutional

ACLU questions Gate City High about prayer before football game.A prayer delivered prior to a high school football game last week resulted in Gate City High School receiving a letter Tuesday from the Virginia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. In the letter, the ACLU informed the school that it believed a prayer said during a student-led memorial service prior to Gate City’s Sept. 11 home game against Sullivan South High School was unconstitutional.

It also asked for the practice to cease immediately.

“We heard from someone who attends these football games … that the game last Friday was opened with a prayer and that they had seen this happen last season as well,” said Rebecca K. Glenberg, legal director for the Virginia ACLU. “The Supreme Court has made it quite clear that public high school football games cannot be opened with an official prayer.” That holds true even if the opening prayer is done by students, she said.

INFORMAÇÕES COM CHIP CHICK

Heroes of Newerth

Being quite a fan of the custom game Defense of the Ancients (played through Blizzard’s Warcraft III game), I readily admit I was both excited and skeptical when hearing the news that a new game was coming out called Heroes of Newerth, which pretty much was a straight copy of DOTA except stand-alone.

Unfortunately, I am not currently in the closed beta nor will I be participating in the open beta so I can’t really describe how the game plays out, but here is a link to the IGN preview of it.

My hopes are that it comes out and blows us all away, but I’ll be satisfied as long as it does not taint the name of DOTA too much.

Compliments: Best Of

“You are this dramatic character I couldn’t of made up in the wildest corners of my imagination.”

I don’t know if the woman who said the words I wrote above meant them as a compliment, but I took them as such and I’ll never forget them because that is what the best compliments do. They stick to our skulls like Post-It notes, reminding us why we’re great or important or unique or special.

Compliments, unlike gifts, are always better to receive than to give. Giving a compliment, as writer Tom Chiarella writes in his Esquire article, “The Perfect Compliment”* is hard. So hard in fact, sometimes it’s not even worth giving, which is something I suggested in the post I wrote yesterday**.

But receiving a compliment, a true, genuine compliment is as good as finding money on the street, if the amount of money were over $20. And if it comes from a stranger, than it’s going to take $50 to match that feeling, because compliments from strangers always sound like good songs we haven’t heard in a long time.

Thinking about compliments and what they mean to us, begs the question, what are some of your most memorable compliments?

Below are some of the most memorable compliments I have ever received from  strangers. Check them out and then, if you can, write a couple of the best compliments you ever received in the Comments section.

On my writing, a young kid once told me…

I’m trying to write like you, man.

On the way I look, a girl working the door of a party I went to by myself once told me…

As cute as you are, you’re by yourself? Where you gonna be? Soon as I get done with these names, I’m buying you a drink.

On my work ethic, a father and his young son were eating at the restaurant I worked for in high school. The father points to me and says  to his son…

You see what he’s doing right there? Watch him work because that’s how you should work when you have a job.

On my intelligence, the editor-in-chief of a major men’s magazine once told me…

I’ve met a lot of people. You’re one of the smartest.

So there it is folks, some of the most memorable compliments I’ve received. There are plenty more, but I’d rather hear yours. Go!
